Rome was probably one of my favorite places that we visited in Europe. Its rich history and hidden treasures make it enthralling.

On our first night in Rome, we arrived around 4 or 5, we checked into our hotel and then decided to venture out into the city and embark on "Rick Steve's Night Walk Through Rome." We were so glad we did, Trevi Fountain (above) was just one of the many highlights. It was like all of the best in a 2 hour walk.

I'm tossing in my coins...1 to insure my return to Rome one day, and 1 to make a wish.

One of the strangest, funnies and most memorable moments of our trip took place while we were walking along the Tiber river back to our hotel. All of a sudden I was kind of like, wow it smells awful, but this is not unusual in Europe. Then I kind of realized it felt a little slimy under my feet. And then suddently I heard what must have been THOUSANDS of birds in the trees above us. All of it kind of clicks rather slowly until you look around you and literally EVERY SURFACE is WHITE. We were like, holy crap (literally), so we pulled up our hoods/scarves and started sprinting. Miraculously we emerged unscathed; however, Matthew made me run back to take a picture of the car. By the end of this little extravaganza we were both laughing hysterically because it was so absolutely unbelieve how much bird poop there was. I doubt we'll ever forget it :)

The next day we went to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The ruins were unbelievable. We spent to good part of a day walking around with our audio guides, continually amazed at the history behind the stone and marble ruins in front of our eyes.

Another highlight of Rome was a visit to the Colosseum. There's really no words to describe it!

Here we're standing in front of Capital Hill. The horse statue in the middle is Marcus Auralius.

The Pantheon was an impressive building. It wasn't possible to capture its size on camera.

In this picture we're standing in front of St. Peter's Basillica in Vatican City.

I know the lighting isn't great in this picture, but the Colosseum was absolutely enchanting at night. I love it!

We walked by this castle, Castel Sant Angelo, every time we walked to and from our hotel. It was amazing how it is just sitting right in the middle of the city. Rome was almost majestic (aside from the bird poop)...it was the perfect conclusion to an amazing trip. We feel so blessed to have been able to do this together, and have made memories that will last a lifetime!
